Health Office

A Registered Nurse supervises the Health Aide at District 622 schools. Our health aide will dispense medication, determine the appropriate action in emergencies, and monitor the health concerns of students. The following are points for you to remember about school health services:

Please call the Attendance Line 651-702-8600 before 10:00 a.m. to report absences.
The health aide must be informed of students taking any medication in school.
A written order from a physician is required whenever your child is to receive medication at school. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol and cough drops. Controlled substances such as Ritalin, Dexedrine, Cylert, and Adderall, must be delivered to school by an adult. Students should not bring these medications to school.
Our health aide and trained volunteers conduct vision and hearing screening. Parents are notified if further testing is suggested.
State law requires children to show evidence of completion of immunizations before they are legally enrolled in school.

Important Information

Illness or Injury

If a child shows any indications of being ill before leaving for school, the child should be kept at home. If a student has had a fever of 100 degrees or more, the student should stay home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal and remains normal without fever-reducing medication.

A student with flu symptoms also needs to stay home for 24 hours without vomiting before returning to school. Call 651-702-8600 before 10 a.m. to report the absence.

If a child becomes ill or is injured in school, the parent/guardian will be contacted.

A student who has been absent from school should have a written excuse when he/she returns to school.

Please report to the school immediately if your child has contracted any communicable disease (suspected or confirmed) and/or conditions such as head lice or scabies.

If emergency treatment is needed and we cannot contact you, we will notify your family physician or call 911.

Weather Appropriate Clothing

Dress / Appropriate Clothing

While we have no formal dress code for students, clothing can influence how children feel and act. We are concerned about all children's health and safety, so the following guidelines do apply:

Clothing should be clean, neat, and in good taste
Clothing should not expose undergarments
During cold weather, we require students to wear hats, mittens or gloves, coats, and boots
During warm weather, students should not wear "short-shorts" or tops that expose a lot of skin (skinny strap tank-tops)
Black-soled shoes that leave marks on tiles are prohibited
Shoes with wheels in them are not allowed in school
Hats, caps, scarves, and hoods must not be worn in school

All students should be wearing tennis-type shoes to school. All classes are on the playground daily, even on days when they do not have Phy Ed. We have made a commitment to providing daily physical activity for our students. Open-toed shoes, flip-flops, and sandals should not be worn to school. The pea-rock from the playground gets into these types of shoes and is beginning to damage the floors. In addition, our grounds are seasonally sprayed with fertilizers and weed-killers.

Leaving School During the Day

There are times when it is necessary for a child to leave school early for an appointment. Please attempt to schedule these appointments either before or after school or on days when school is not in session. However, when it is necessary for your child to be excused during school hours, we ask that the office is called or a note be sent with your child about the request to leave.

Please sign your child out at the reception desk. It is important that we have a record of who picks up your child. Per school procedures, our office receptionist will call your student to the office when you arrive at school. Please plan ahead for time.

The ISD 622 School Board recognizes that nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that promote student wellness are essential components of the educational process and that good health fosters student attendance and learning.

In 2017, District 622 adopted a revised Wellness policy to promote student wellness, prevent and reduce childhood obesity, and assure that school meals and other food and beverages sold and otherwise made available on the school campus during the school day are consistent with applicable minimum local, state, and federal standards.
